about

Kuba Sokołowski - piano
Szymon Nidzworski – soprana, and tenor saxophone
Mateusz Dobosz – double bass
Patryk Dobosz - drums

These are peaceful autumn days, the first year of my studies. The piano; black and mystical. Classical music and the joy of studying. But in my heart of hearts there is jazz. I meet Mateusz, we talk a lot about music. The double bass has the shape of a woman: a beautiful, majestic, mysterious one. The feminine factor in jazz music. Strumming his double bass, Mateusz adds a new dimension to jazz. An idea to play in duo is born. The piano gets a new life, days get stormy. We are into creating, playing, showing it the world, infecting others. Mateusz’s brother, Patryk, joins us. He has a feel for drums to which the instrument responds. At that point we begin our adventure as a jazz trio. We are playing what we feel, each putting a piece of oneself into the music, caressing our instruments with sound. Months go by, the academy’s corridor is now resonating with the roaring sound of the saxophone. This is Szymon. There’s something magical about him… Some musical wholeness. He’s a young, extraordinarily talented musician. We start talking about playing in a quartet, the Magnolia project is conceived. We share the ideals and aims. Magnolia has been inspired by music played at funeral ceremonies by New Orlean orchestras. The birthplace of jazz becomes “our” cradle as well. It continues to swing…
